Meet Rich!

on July 31, 2018 No comments

Meet Rich! He is here at the brewery on weekends to help us with sales. He is also our resident hugger and staff teddy bear. Besides hugs, Rich enjoys playing drums and xbox to relax and he loves good sci-fi/horror films. Aliens is still one of his favorites.
Rich has been friends with Pete for many years. When Pete started coming back from Vermont with Heady Topper and Sip of Sunshine years ago,Rich would try them all. One year, Rich won focal banger release tickets in Vermont. He had so much fun being introduced to the beer culture at the release, he was hooked and he says it’s been downhill ever since. Ha.
Feel free to grab some hugs next time you see Rich at the brewery!!

Speed Round:
Do you have a favorite mythical creature?
A Pegasus unicorn hybrid, but on fire and flames trailing it. It may end up on a t-shirt one day.

You are going to the deli for lunch, What is your go to sandwich?
It’s been the same since Junior High, Salami and Swiss on a roll with lettuce tomato mayo and sweet peppers.

What is your favorite memory at Equilibrium so far?
Every weekend is special but still enjoyed our very first release before we realized how many things were about to change.

What’s something you hope to do before the year is over that you haven’t done yet?
I’m hoping to travel a little before the weather turns. It’s nice to get away sometimes.

Favorite breakfast cereal?
Raisin Bran

If you could share a meal with 4 people, dead or alive who would they be?
Rob Zombie, Gene Hoglan, Jhonen Vasquez and Betty White. Anything from arson to homicide could happen at that dinner, but the soundtrack would be great though.

Energy Wave!

on July 25, 2018 No comments

In addition to Here and Now, we will also debut Energy Wave (8.0% ABV) this Saturday (7/28; 11:30 – 6 PM) at $20 per four pack, limit 1 case per person (limits subject to change).

We are thrilled with Dream Wave Fluctuation. We revisited the Wave treatment with one of our favorite beers by paying tribute to the other side of the MC² relationship with energy. Energy Wave takes the MC² grain bill, increases the hops, and adds a touch of lactose. Energy Wave pours a glowing hazy tangerine color, releasing bright tropical notes of mango, pineapple, lactose, and apricot. Energy Wave tastes like a succulent wave of creamy mango juice with a touch of sweet that is dangerously drinkable and balanced.

For science, we are also releasing a freshly canned batch of MC² this weekend at $18 per 4-pk, Limit 1 case pp.

Here and Now!

on July 25, 2018 No comments

This Saturday 7/28 from 11:30am-6 pm at the brewery we are pleased to introduce Here and Now aged on Blackberry, Raspberry and Boysenberry. $18 per bottle, limit 4 bottles per person.
Here and Now is our second collaborative series with Dr. Jason Rodriguez who will also be joining us for the release on Saturday.

The philosophy behind this beer is to create a wonderful drinking experience in this very moment, right here and right now. When you become present and let go of resisting what is, and not give place to thoughts about what happened or what might happen, you may find yourself content and really enjoying your beverage and the people and place around it.

We took our house wild “Honey Badger” culture (no saccharomyces) and allowed it to ferment and sour over several months before refermenting it with additional select Brettanomyces from our farmhouse cultures along with blackberry, raspberry and boysenberry at more than double the rate of fruit we use for There and Back Again. The result is a berry blast smoothie with a meaty fruit taste and a drinkable pleasant dryness boosted by our microorganisms. The beer is unfiltered, naturally carbonated and will continue to evolve over time if properly cellared.
More to Come..

Canadian Kyle!

on July 24, 2018 No comments
We have another Kyle to introduce you to. He is known around here as “Canadian Kyle” and he is our graphic designer. He is responsible for the cool new labels you’ve been seeing. He was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick Canada and has called the US home for 15 years now. He got into craft beer with his buddy Tyler as Vermont was across the lake from where they lived in upstate NY. Kyle would frequent Vermont often to go on excursions which included a days worth of mountain biking, chasing Fiddlehead Second Fiddle releases, and hitting their favorite spots in Winooski on the way home. Kyle attended SUNY Plattsburgh and has a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts. He now lives in the Hudson Valley.

Speed Round:
What is your favorite sport to watch and why? (Guessing Hockey because Canada)
Nope, not Hockey! Ever since I was a kid growing up, my favorite “sport” to watch was the X-Games. I’ve always been a really big fan of action and freestyle sports.

How do you recharge?
Whenever I need to recharge, I typically put The Office on and draw; It’s therapy.

You have a hotdog in front of you, what are your go-to condiments?
I eat like an unsupervised 7 year old at a birthday party. I would put everything I can reach on it.

Favorite EQ beer?
For nostalgia, my first EQ beer was MC²….Checked it in December 2nd, 2016. It’s honestly hard to pick a favorite when every beer is a contender.

What is a fun or interesting fact about your hometown?
I’m going to highlight my Dad’s hometown because I think this is better. Nackawic, New Brunswick is home of the worlds largest axe!

Where were you headed last time you boarded plane?
I was out visiting my family in Southern California.
You get to listen to one song for the rest of your life, what is it?
This is tough…Either Get Down by Nas or Three Little Birds by Bob Marley.

dHop0!

on July 19, 2018 No comments

We will also introduce dHop 0 this Saturday (7/21; 11:30 – 6 PM) at $20 per four pack, limit 1 case per person (limits subject to change).

We are undertaking a large but worthwhile endeavor at Equilibrium. All of our yeast and bacteria are proprietary and privately banked. We have been shifting our yeast management practices to uncompromisingly deliver the best beer that the state of brewing science allows.

To kick off this undertaking, we present dHop 0. Fluctuation was in fact the very first dHop we ever brewed. We liked it so much (back in Pete’s basement) we immediately promoted to be its own stand-alone entity. For dHop 0, we go back to one of our favorite recipes and introduce our new yeast (same strain), new fermentation profile, and introduce an additional novel step to the dry hop, which aims to put more hop oils in the glass.

dHop 0 pours a very hazy tangerine color, releasing very forward notes of passionfruit and peach with an undercurrent of sorbet and cream. The flavor follows the aroma with a soft body and a pointed bitterness to balance the juiciness.

There and Back Again aged on Apricots and Peaches!

on July 18, 2018 No comments

There and Back Again aged on Apricots and Peaches was the first beer we ever released. For those of you who missed it, we are pleased to announce that Batch 2 is ready.
This Saturday 7/21 at the brewery from 11:30am-6pm alongside Photon Citrus and MC² we will be releasing There and Back Again aged on Apricots and Peaches (6% ABV) $15 per bottle. Limit 4pp. (subject to change)

There and Back Again is a tale of a spontaneous fermentation, isolation, confiscation, rejuvenation, mutation, and finally perturbation. This sour American wild ale is a collaborative effort with our dear friend Dr. Jason Rodriguez. We took our house “honey badger” mixed culture (no saccharomyces) and allowed it to ferment and sour over several months before refermenting it on both apricot and peaches. The result is a bright and clean stone fruit flavor boosted by the tropical expression of our microorganisms. This beer is unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally carbonated and will continue to evolve over time if properly cellared.

This Saturday 7/21 from 11:30am-6 pm at the brewery we will be selling cans of Photon Citrus. $14 per four pack, limit 1 case per person.

Photon Citrus (4.8% ABV) is our beloved Photon American Pale Ale conditioned on freshly zested oranges, grapefruits, clementines, lemons and limes. It is everything Photon is with a dominant but balanced blend of citrus zest that works in harmony with the flavors found in the base pale ale. Photon Citrus is light, flavorful and zippy and we feel it’s a perfectly refreshing beer for the dog days of summer. We will also have a freshly canned batch of MC² for sale. $18 per 4-pk. Limit 1 case per person.

Meet Ricardo!

on July 17, 2018 No comments
Meet Ricardo, Co-founder and CEO of Equilibrium Brewery. He was born in Newton, MA and raised in Argentina. After becoming an engineer Ricardo moved back to the US to complete a masters degree at MIT in the late 90’s. He was impressed by the variety of beers Cambridge/Boston had to offer. He would talk about beer so much that for his birthday, classmates gave him his first home-brew kit, that’s when things got started. Ricardo began working at a environmental consulting company where he met Pete. By 2013 it was clear to Ricardo that he wanted to follow his passion for brewing and he was able to convince Pete to jump on board and in 2014 Equilibrium Brewery formally started.
Ricardo juggles all aspects of the brewery. He designed most of the layout of the brewery, put the production equipment together and tested and operated it until Ryan and OG Kyle were ready to take over. He also deals with legal and licensing aspects, financials, logistics, HR, business plans, and all the paperwork that is required to keep the brewery running. Ricardo has been married for 22 years to “The love of my life” Maria Jose and they have 3 kids: Valentina, Vince, and Ricardo (aka Richu) that he is extremely proud of.
Speed Round:
*You are known at the brewery for your Argentinian style BBQ. What is your favorite meat to grill?
My favorite is “Bife de Chorizo” (sirloin strip). It has a velvety mouthfeel to it that I really enjoy.
•What are you most proud about at Equilibrium?
I’m proud and humbled by the community involvement and love for our beer. I’m also very grateful to work with people that love this project as much as me.
•Next country you’d like to visit?
Asia, I want to explore the roots of zen buddhism, which I’ve been practicing for many years.
•Favorite moments that involve Equilibrium?
I have a few, early on brew days at Pete’s house with the Batman trilogy playing endlessly, the day the brewery equipment finally arrived, drinking a Photon in a bar for the first time and as of late, a favorite moment was dancing at the after party of Hop City in the UK. What a great DJ that party had!!
(We may get called into his office for this, but we obtained video of his dance)
